Since their introduction, injectables and dermal fillers have become a widely accepted means of maintaining youth, and preventing the signs of aging from getting worse among hundreds of thousands of American women. In fact, according to a 2009 survey conducted by the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF), 87% of Americans who use neurotoxins and hyaluronic acid fillers openly discuss these procedures, which were once considered hush-hush and kept a secret. “Injectables are more popular today than they have ever been. The hyaluronic acids give instant gratification and unlike fillers of the past, what’s used today looks and feels natural,” says Encino, CA Plastic Surgeon George Sanders, MD.

The benefits of deeper injections
There is a new technique that doctors are using to get better benefits out of fillers, especially for areas like the tear troughs and corners of the mouth. They are placing the product in the lower third of the face under the muscle, as opposed to just in the skin. “When injected deeper, the filler lasts longer ¬¬– six months or more – because it’s not metabolized by the body as quickly as when it’s closer to the skin,” says New York City dermatologist Patricia Wexler, MD. “It adds a different type of volume but it does increase your chances of bruising.”

Stop wrinkles from forming
Botox can be used to stop wrinkles dead in their tracks and prevent new ones from forming. Keep in mind that the results are not permanent and repeat injections are necessary. This works by blocking the nerve receptors on the muscle to inhibit wrinkle formation. Botox is also known for eliminating crow’s feet, smoothing out forehead lines and lifting the tip of the nose.
