Lasers

What are different types of lasers?
There are many types of lasers that are used for cosmetic procedures. The difference in these lasers is the wavelength that they utilize which is measured in nanometers. They include:

  • Ruby laser-- 694 nm
  • Alexandrite laser-- 755 nm
  • Diode laser-- 800 nm
  • Neodymium - yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser-- 1064 nm
  • Intense pulsed light system (IPL) without heat-- 550-1200 nm
  • Light and heat energy LHE-- 400-1200 nm

What types of lasers does Sona MedSpa use?
Sona MedSpa uses Alexandrite and Diode technology, both considered the "Gold Star Standard" for laser hair removal.

Definitions to know:

  • Alexandrite Laser Technology: The alexandrite laser is a shorter wavelength system with a specific light energy of 755nm. It is the fastest lasers for hair removal and appropriate for quick treatment on parts of the body with large surface areas. The laser has the ability to penetrate deeply into the dermis. The resultant heat build up in the hair shafts disables the hair follicles which enables it to achieve effective laser hair removal.
  • Diode Laser Technology: A diode laser has a longer wavelength which provides deeper penetration into the skin. A diode laser for this reason can also be used to potentially increase the results for level IV and V skin types. Finally, diode lasers allow you treat large areas effectively at one time, simmilar to the Alexandrite technology.
  • Neodymium - yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser: A ND:YAG is a type of laser used in cosmetic procedures. The Nd:YAG is an non-ablative laser, which means that it targets tissue in the deeper layers of skin, leaving the top-most layers uninjured. The laser is typically used to address cosmetic skin problems such as unsightly veins and pigmentation problems, and for the removal of unwanted hair.
