The Science Behind

What makes being Sona Smooth a reality?

A laser is a high-energy beam of light that can be directed into certain areas or tissues within the skin. These beams of light are produced in one wavelength or color at a time, and can vary in terms of their strength and the type of tissue that they can target.

Laser hair removal technology is the use of this invisible beam of light and a constant source of heat that penetrates the hair follicle, disabling and then destroying it at its root while preserving the surrounding skin.

The procedure of removing unwanted hair simply is targeting the follicle and then directing the laser beam to its root. The hair removal process begins as the laser beam finds the hair follicle that it is targeting by first finding the pigment (the dark color of the hair). All three components of the hair follicle (matrix, propella, and stem cells) must be disabled to prevent the hair from growing back.

Typically, 30% of the hair on the body is removed after each treatment. Therefore, certain wavelengths need to be used to reach the hairs. This also explains why generally 5 to 6 treatments are needed to effectively become Sona Smooth.

There are many different kinds of lasers. Here at Sona, we utilize Diode and YAG and Alexandrite laser technologies to insure safe, effective hair removal.

Sona Certified
Although the bulk of the labor is attributed to the laser that removes the hair follicle, successful laser hair removal depends upon the skill level and knowledge of the clinician who performs each procedure. Better said, the laser only can do as much as its wielder can achieve. Sonas’ medically trained staff, all of whom are laser hair removal specialists, receive 40 hours of training before being Sona Certified. Additionally, they continually learn new techniques and parameters as they develop through our ongoing training efforts.
