Preparing for Fat Reduction
Your provider will discuss all necessary pre-treatment requirements at your consultation. Here are some general steps:
- Two weeks before treatment: If possible, avoid blood-thinning and anti-inflammatory medications for two weeks before treatment, as these products can increase the risk of swelling and bruising after injections.
- Two to three days before treatment: Discontinue use of Retin-A and avoid applying potentially irritating products such as Benzoyl Peroxide, Hydroquinone and Glycolic Acid. Taking Arnica tablets two to three days before your procedure can reduce the risk of bruising.
- 24 hours before treatment: Alcohol can increase your risk of bruising by thinning your blood. Do not consume alcoholic beverages for a minimum of 24 hours before your procedure. Additionally, you must reschedule your appointment if you have a cold sore, blemish or rash in the treatment area 24 hours before injection.
We also recommend scheduling your injection for a time when minor bruising or swelling will not impact social obligations. Opt for an appointment at least two weeks before a social event, such as a vacation or wedding, to enjoy your results without visible side effects.
Aftercare and Recovery Steps
Although Kybella® requires minimal downtime after treatment, we recommend several aftercare steps to maximize your comfort and optimize results. Post-treatment instructions include:
- Avoid massaging or manipulating the treatment area for three to five hours after treatment.
- Refrain from sleeping on your stomach or side for the first 24 hours post-treatment to prevent product dispersal.
- Do not perform strenuous activities, including heavy lifting or vigorous exercise, for at least 24 hours after your procedure.
- Ice the targeted area with gentle pressure for 15 minutes three times a day on the day of treatment.
- Take Tylenol or Acetaminophen if you experience mild discomfort or tenderness.
- Avoid applying potentially irritating products, such as Benzoyl Peroxide or Glycolic Acid, for two to three days following treatment.

Most patients feel a sting or some tingling at the injection site. After treatment, you may experience some temporary bruising, swelling or redness. These symptoms usually fade quickly.
