What Is a SkinMedica® Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are rejuvenating treatments that use topical chemical solutions to exfoliate the top layer of the skin. The exfoliation causes the top layer of skin to peel away, revealing the fresh layer underneath that looks brighter and feels softer. This treatment is common for skin on the neck, face and chest, but you can also apply it to other body regions for overall skin rejuvenation.
These treatments are effective and safe. Many patients request chemical peels to treat wrinkles, pigmentation, rough texture, acne and other skin irregularities. You can receive chemical peels in varying strengths to meet your unique aesthetic goals.

The Different Types of SkinMedica® Peels
There are several types of SkinMedica® chemical peels, each targeting different skin concerns and having varying strengths. Sōna MedSpa offers three SkinMedica® peels:
- Illuminize Peel®: This treatment is a noninvasive chemical peel that gives your skin a radiant glow. Illuminize Peel® combines a newer generation of alpha-hydroxy acids, phytic acid and common peeling agents. This innovative combination maximizes rejuvenation with low irritation. You can enjoy immediate results with no visible peeling or downtime.
- Vitalize Peel®: Patients looking to fight the effects of time, environmental changes or sun damage can schedule a Vitalize Peel® treatment. Those with mild to moderate acne, pigment irregularities, sun damage or fine lines and wrinkles can benefit from this peel. Patients often notice results after a single session, but experience significant results after three to six sessions. Light peeling often lasts around seven days with minimal or no redness.
- Rejuvenize Peel®: The Rejuvenize Peel® produces the most exfoliation and penetrates the epidermis deeply. This peel leverages an advanced peeling agent formulation, a penetration enhancer and an anti-irritant to control exfoliation on the uppermost damaged skin layers. Peeling and redness often last between seven and 14 days after treatment.

Many patients notice immediate improvements after treatment. Initial results often include reduced acne visibility, improved skin texture and a more balanced skin tone. After three to six treatments, patients can see full results, including:
- Brighter skin: Your skin will look more radiant and refreshed. Many patients notice reduced dullness and uneven pigmentation.
- Smoother texture: You may notice softened mild acne scars and fewer rough patches on your skin. Your skin will feel smoother to the touch.
- Minimized signs of aging: Fine lines and wrinkles, especially those around the mouth and eyes, may become less noticeable. Your skin will look plumper and more youthful.
- Reduced breakouts: Breakouts may happen much less frequently than prior to your treatment. Chemical peels can also help unclog pores to reduce acne and give you a smoother complexion.
- Improved discoloration: You may notice fewer brown spots, sun spots and other pigmentation impurities. Your overall complexion will appear more uniform.
Our SkinMedica® peel treatments last around 30 minutes. You can see visible results after a single session, but we recommend between three and six treatments, about four weeks apart, for optimal results. Your Sōna MedSpa provider can discuss treatment frequency with you during your consultation.
We'll help you determine which peel is right for you by assessing your skin concerns, identifying your beauty goals and determining the appropriate peel strength. Generally, the Illuminize Peel® is best for those with sensitive skin or those treating mild conditions. The Vitalize Peel® can address mild to moderate imperfections, and the Rejuvenize Peel® is suitable for moderate to severe conditions.
There are a few pre-treatment requirements. Your provider can discuss specific details with you during your consultation. Generally, we recommend avoiding waxing, dermal fillers, laser hair removal, electrolysis and depilatory creams two weeks before your treatment.
Additionally, one week prior to your appointment, avoid products or treatments that can increase skin sensitivity, including any products containing benzoyl peroxide, AHA, BHA or retinol. Your provider can give you details on whether you can continue using your current products.
Downtime will vary by peel strength. Peeling can last up to a week. You should wait at least four weeks before having other facial procedures such as facial hair removal, BOTOX® injections, injectable fillers, microdermabrasion and laser treatments.
Avoid direct sun exposure for one week, and always wear sun protection with SPF 30 or greater. Moisturize your skin during peeling with a provider-recommended product to relieve dryness. Use a soap-free cleanser to cleanse your face, and avoid using a washcloth or scrubbing the treatment area.
