Microneedling
If your face is showing common signs of aging, like wrinkles and fine lines, there’s a minimally invasive way to fight back. At Sōna MedSpa, we use the SkinPen® to enhance your skin.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment for skin rejuvenation. The procedure is safe for most people in good overall health. The treatment works by creating tiny holes in the skin’s surface to trigger a natural healing process and stimulate elastin and collagen production in your deep skin layers. This corrective treatment can help address a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines, enlarged pores, acne scars and wrinkles. Most people experience firmer and smoother skin and a more youthful appearance after treatment.
At Sōna MedSpa, we use SkinPen®, an FDA-approved device, to complete microneedling treatments. The SkinPen® device stimulates natural wound healing by creating controlled micro-injuries. The release of cytokines and growth factors results in new collagen and elastin production.
What to Know About the Microneedling Procedure
You can address several skin concerns with a microneedling procedure. From combating signs of aging to creating a more balanced complexion, you can improve your appearance and confidence. With such versatility in one treatment, it’s important to discuss your aesthetic goals before undergoing your procedure.
A thorough consultation with a Sōna MedSpa provider ensures we understand your desired look and craft the most effective way to bring it to life. During your consultation, your provider will ask questions about your treatment history, establish your beauty goals and help you prepare for the pre- and post-treatment steps.
When it comes time for your treatment, you can expect:
- Topical numbing: Prior to the procedure, your provider will apply a topical anesthetic to maximize your comfort and ensure the best microneedling experience.
- SkinPen® application: Your provider will methodically apply the SkinPen® to the treatment area and move it around on the skin.
- Optional Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Sōna MedSpa harvests PRP by drawing a small amount of your blood and processing it in a centrifuge to separate components. After removing red and white blood cells from the plasma, we can combine the plasma with your microneedling treatment to further improve skin texture.
Most individuals recover within 48 to 72 hours by limiting heat and UV exposure and keeping the skin hydrated. You can repeat SkinPen® treatments each month or combine your procedure with other treatments for optimal results.
Pre-Treatment Advice
Microneedling is a safe procedure that is suitable for most individuals. Sōna MedSpa adheres to strict safety standards and implements best practices to ensure you receive the best care possible. However, to maximize your comfort and safety, we recommend several additional pre-treatment instructions:
- Two weeks before treatment: Beginning two weeks before your appointment, you must avoid chemical peels, waxing and chemical depilatories. These treatments can make your skin more sensitive and cause irritation after your microneedling procedure.
- One week before treatment: The week leading up to your procedure, you should avoid sun exposure, self-tanning products and tanning beds. Healthy, untanned skin can heal better after microneedling and help you achieve the best results.
- The day of treatment: Arrive at your appointment with fully cleansed skin, free of makeup, moisturizers, cologne and other products. Inform your provider of any medication allergies, as they will apply a topical numbing cream before the treatment.
We cannot complete microneedling services if you have active acne in the treatment area. We also cannot perform the procedure on those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Post-Treatment Instructions and Care
This procedure requires minimal to no downtime. It is common for your skin to be flushed or red immediately after treatment, but this redness should reduce within 24 to 48 hours. You may notice some mild burning, flakiness, swelling, bruising or sensitivity up to one week after treatment while your skin heals. Your provider will go over specific post-treatment instructions with you following your procedure. Here are some general steps:
- Wash your face with cool water and a gentle cleanser. Gently pat your skin dry.
- Apply mineral-based sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater. Reapply every 60 to 90 minutes while outdoors.
- Use Tylenol or ice packs for pain. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen and Motrin.
- Resume makeup use, if desired, after 48 to 72 hours post-treatment.
- Avoid washing the PRP solution until the morning after treatment.
- Do not exercise for three days after your session.
- Avoid direct sun exposure for 14 days, but ideally 30 days, following treatment.
- Do not use self-tanning products and tanning beds for seven to 14 days after the procedure.
- Avoid swimming, steam rooms, hot water and yoga for three to seven days until skin irritation has resolved.
Microneedling FAQs
Microneedling offers a solution for signs of aging, acne scars and additional skin concerns, but we understand you might have some additional questions. Take a look at these frequently asked questions about the procedure:
Most people do not find microneedling painful. The topical numbing cream enhances comfort during the procedure. The feeling may be compared to light sandpaper moving gently across the skin.
Microneedling can help address acne scars. This procedure stimulates new skin cell growth and breaks down scar tissue to create a more uniform and smoother texture and appearance. However, we cannot treat individuals with active acne in the treatment area.
Topical numbing cream application typically occurs about half an hour before the procedure. Depending on the extent of your treatment areas, the microneedling procedure often lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.
If you receive PRP, avoid washing the solution off until the morning after treatment. Otherwise, you can wash your face with a gentle cleanser and cool water. You should avoid harsh skincare products, like exfoliants, strong acids or retinoids, for several days after treatment. You should also avoid facial treatments for at least two weeks after your procedure to allow your skin to fully recover.
Sōna MedSpa has several locations in North Carolina and Virginia. With us, you can schedule microneedling in Greensboro, Midlothian, Glen Allen, Ballantyne and Lake Norman.
Yes, you can boost healing and collagen production with PRP and some topical serums. You can also schedule LED light therapy to reduce redness immediately after treatment. After a few weeks, you can also schedule fillers and facials to further enhance your appearance.
